BUZZING NOISE, ONE HEADLIGHT DOESN’T FIRE

If you hear a buzzing noise at one of your headlights and it doesn’t turn on, but the other one does, you either have a ballast or bulb that has come unplugged or is defective.
Step 1: Check Connections. A loose connection can cause this symptom!
Step 2: Step 3: Swap ballasts around on vehicle (put the driver side ballast into the passenger side headlight, and vice versa). If the problem follows the ballast around to the other side, then it’s an indicator of a defective ballast. If the problem stays on the original side, then it’s a connection issue or a defective bulb.
Step 3: Swap bulbs around on vehicle (put the driver side bulb into the passenger side headlight, and vice versa). If the buzzing sound follows the bulb to the other side of the vehicle, you know it’s a bad bulb. Contact Starr for a replacement.

Ballast

BOTH HEADLIGHTS WON’T TURN ON ALL OF A SUDDEN

If one day your headlights both stopped working at the same time it’s highly unlikely that you have bad bulbs or ballasts. The likely culprit is the relay harness(es). Check the fuses at the battery connection and if bad, replace with same-size fuse available at any parts store, most retail stores, or a gas station.
If you find and replace a blown fuse, test the system again. You need to discover why the fuse blew in the first place. The fuse is a safety device designed to cut power to the headlights in the case of a component failure.
If you turn the headlights on again after replacing a fuse, and the fuse blows immediately again, it’s time to start unplugging components until you discover the culprit. Unplug one item at a time, then test the system. If you unplug this part, and the fuse no longer pops, you’ve found the defective component.

HEADLIGHT(S) STOPPED WORKING GRADUALLY

If over time a headlight became more difficult to turn on it’s an indicator of a failing component.
Example: Turn headlights on and off again and again during startup to get them both to fire. Sometimes they both work fine, other times one side doesn’t “like to” turn on right away every time…
Generally, this is caused by a dying HID bulb or ballast. Simply remove a component and swap it around with the other one to see if the issue follows that component.
First try to swap ballasts around on your vehicle (put the driver side ballast into the passenger side headlight, and vice versa). If nothing changes after testing it this way, the problem is not the ballast.
Next, try to swap the bulbs around on vehicle (put the driver side bulb into the passenger side headlight, and vice versa). Swapping the bulbs around should tell you where the issue lies as long as you tested the ballasts already and they are not defective.

HIGH / LOW FUNCTION STOPPED WORKING. ONLY HAVE LOW BEAM!

On page 6 of this document STARR HID USA HEADLIGHT COMPONENT LIST you’ll see a component labeled as #6: Projector Actuator Module. Refer to this document for pictures.
If all of a sudden you lose the ability to flip your headlights to high beam it’s most likely caused by an error with this module. It needs to be replaced. Contact us for a replacement and we will send it to you or you can send us your headlight and we’ll swap in a new module for you.

Troubleshooting STARR HID headlight housingsprojector actuator module The way to replace this module is as follows:
1. Cut two small wires coming off of Actuator Module (normally both two small blue wires. Sometimes they are blue or yellow). Leave enough slack to connect the wiring to a new module.
2. Remove 2 Philips-head screws that hold the module to the headlight. Sometimes it’s stuck in place with gray silicone adhesive. Simply pry it loose from the housing.
3. The new replacement module will have two small blue wires coming off of it, and these need to be connected to the small blue wires that come out of the back side of the headlight where the original module was connected. NONE OF THE WIRE COLORS MATTER HERE! Simply connect each wire to another wire the same way the original module came off. Blue to blue, or blue to yellow, or both blues to both blues, just connect them any orientation you want.
4. Reconnect the new module to the headlight housing with the original 2 Philips screws.
NOTE: If the above 1-4 steps did not fix your issue, then you most likely need to replace the entire wire harness instead. Contact us for a replacement wire harness in this instance.

MY HEADLIGHT BULBS ARE DIFFERENT COLORS!

Sometimes with a xenon/HID bulb like what’s used in the Starr HID headlights you run the risk of experiencing something called “Color Shift”. This is a well-documented phenomenon that can happen to anybody at any time. If this happens to your headlights you’ll know because one bulb will be the normal color and the other bulb will over time turn more yellowish, or more bluish in hue.
The fix for this is to replace both bulbs with a new pair. Either under warranty, or by your own accord.

ONE OF MY HEADLIGHT BULBS IS NOT AS BRIGHT AS THE OTHER!

Sometimes one headlight will look brighter than the other. This can happen due to one of four things:
1. Defective HID ballast not putting out as much power. Solution: Replace ballast (see above notes regarding “Headlights Won’t Turn On” for ballast trouble shooting tips).
2. Defective HID bulb not creating as much light output. Solution: Replace both bulbs (see above notes regarding “Headlights Won’t Turn On” for bulb trouble shooting tips).
3. Low voltage at headlight wire harness. Solution: Either rectify voltage issue with your vehicle, or replace/repair relay wire harness for Starr headlights.
4. One headlight lens is cloudy or pitted. Solution: Replace headlight housing.
